This year, November 29th was marked as the worldwide day of generosity, Giving Tuesday! This new concept, originating in the US as a way of combatting the post-Thanksgiving consumer indulgences of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, has begun to arrive in the post-Soviet world over the last couple of years.
It’s really just a day to celebrate generosity and charitable causes of any kind, when anyone can organise a sale, a concert, an auction, an exhibition, a fun run, or anything else that can attract society’s attention to the possibilities for helping others less fortunate than themselves. So for a country like Kazakhstan which doesn’t have the history of charitable activity that many in the West do, Giving Tuesday is an excellent chance to influence people and encourage them to show kindness in their family, to their friends and to everyone around them.
Here at Salem Social Village, we consider it our duty (and delight!) to support this excellent worldwide initiative, and so we took an active part on our site again this year by inviting our friends and clients to support the local Rehabilitation Centres for homeless people. Their centres for men and for women offer shelter to those who find themselves through various circumstances living on the street.
People visiting Salem were able to make donations to support the work of the Rehabilitation Centres, or to buy wonderful little handmade crafts and gifts.
So let Giving Tuesday be a chance for us all to show kindness and generosity to others in some way every year.
